Ellwood City Forge recently purchased MC Machine, a machine shop that specializes in heavy machining and fabrication. The new company, called Ellwood Ohio Machine, will be operated by Ellwood City Forge and will complement ECF’s existing capabilities.
EOM’s equipment includes a planer mill, horizontal boring mills, vertical turning lathes, and welding and fabrication equipment geared towards processing large and heavy products. The facility is 72,000 square feet with numerous cranes equipped with up to 70 ton lifting capacity.
Ellwood Ohio Machine provides fabricated, welded and machined components used in the power generation industry including gas, steam, nuclear and hydro. In addition, EOM is experienced in manufacturing components for aerospace, mining equipment, locomotive and automotive industries.
Ellwood Group Inc. and Scot Forge are expanding the capabilities of North American Forgemasters (NAF) in New Castle, PA, marking the second chapter in the 50-50 joint venture partnership between the two companies. NAF was established by the two partners in 1997 when together they built a 4,500 ton open die forging press.
The thirty year relationship continues to grow and, building on the success of the 1997 joint venture, the partners are investing over $80 million to add a state-of-the-art open die press facility at its New Castle location to meet their customers’ needs for larger forgings. Danieli Breda has been contracted to build a 90 MN (10,100 ton) press for NAF. This press will have the greatest tonnage, the greatest daylight, the largest opening, and be the fastest acting large open die press in North America. It will be serviced by both a 200 ton rail bound and 100 ton mobile manipulator; each the largest in North America, as well as three additional forging furnaces. Installation of the new press will take place alongside the NAF facility which is adjacent to the primary material supplier, Ellwood Quality Steels. The new facility which will also have a 190 ton overhead crane, has been designed to process ingots up to 165 tons.
With the installation of this press, NAF will provide its customers with a stand-alone operation, quality system, and dedicated sales team. The target markets will include subsea oil and gas, power generation, including the evolving nuclear small modular reactor market.
The new facility will be complete and the press will be assembled in the 4th quarter of 2014, and production will start in Q1 2015.

Jeff holds a BS and MS in Materials Science & Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and a ScD in Materials Processing from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Prior to joining Ellwood Group, Inc. in 2005, he worked for the General Electric Aircraft Engines Division, the US Department of Energy, and Booz Allen & Hamilton.
Daniel P. Hamilton, ECF’s former President, has accepted a position with Ellwood Group, Inc. as Vice President, Corporate Strategic Account Management. Dan holds a degree in Metallurgy from Pennsylvania State University. After working in metallurgy positions with Babcock & Wilcox and Bull Moose Tube, he joined Ellwood City Forge in 1988 as Quality Manager. He became President of ECF in 2000 and retired from that role in 2013.
In honor of our Olympic Teams in Sochi, ECF celebrated Team USA Day on Friday, February 7, 2014. To show our support and cheer on our many US athletes, employees wore red, white and blue clothing. The Ellwood City Forge hosted its 25-Year Club banquet September 20, 2013 at the Connoquenessing Country Club. The annual banquet honors employees and retirees who have attained 25 years of service with the company. The invocation was presented by Stan Price, a 25-Year Club member.
A total of 125 members, both active and retired, were present at this year’s celebration.
Four new members were inducted: Elvy Kirkham, Dan Hamilton, Suzanne Durbin and Diane Arkwright. Each was given a 25-Year pin and plate from ECF President Dan Hamilton.
At the end of the evening, each member was presented a gift of appreciation for their years of service to Ellwood City Forge.

As a follow up to ECF’s Penny War that came to a closure at the end of August, ECF employees along with the company match raised a total of $2,675.00!! The charity that we will be donating to is Project Bundle Up, a partnering program of the Salvation Army. The program has been working with the Salvation Army for 28 years and provides new winter outerwear to low income families. ECF’s donation will directly provide hats, gloves, jackets and boots for families from Ellwood City and Riverside, K-12 grade. On Saturday, October 19th the Salvation Army will take the kids to K-Mart at the Lawrence Village Plaza on Route 65. Volunteers from ECF will help the children in picking out the correct sizes and walking them through the store.
Last week a few employees from ECF presented the Penny War check to Suzanne at the Salvation Army.

Ellwood National Steel (ENS) in Irvine, PA announced the commissioning of its VOD unit for the production of stainless steel ingots for forging, ring rolling and as electrodes for VAR and ESR remelting. The VOD is an addition to ENS’s existing ladle furnace melt shop which has been producing carbon and alloy steel ingots for the trade since 2005 in weights up to 24 tons from melt heats up to 48 tons. ENS will also expand its ingot teeming capability to melt ingots up to 45 tons in individual weight. The VOD was manufactured and installed by SMS-Siemag, Germany.
